BMW 135i: new engine and 7-speed DCT

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

For the model year 2010, the BMW 135i Coupe and Cabriolet will be updated with the new N55 single turbo engine. It loses one turbo (though the specs sheet indicates similar performance with power and torque) but gains a transmission gear – the 6-speed auto has been replaced by the non-M version of the 7-speed DCT twin clutch transmission that found its way into the 335i earlier.

With these changes, the combined fuel consumption figure for the Coupe drops to 8.5 liters per 100km which BMW says is nearly 1 liter less than the model equipped with the twin turbo engine and the regular automatic gearbox.

Auto Stuff: EcoBoost F-150 Will Get Added Torque

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

Ford has announced publicly that it will equip future F-150 models with the company’s new EcoBoost V6 engine, but it is the news that there will be an increase in torque. With twin-turbochargers and direct injection, the 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 already makes 365-hp and 350 ft-lbs of torque.

Director of Advanced Powertrain, Engineering and Research at Ford, Dan Kapp said that torque number will go up, due mostly to the more efficient layout of the F-150.

With added space to develop a more free-flowing exhaust setup, as well as a truck transmission that can handle serious amounts of torque, more low-end grunt will be a part of the package.

Impressively, the EcoBoost motor already makes 300 ft-lbs of twist at just 1500 rpm. During the technology seminar at the Ford Advanced Technology Center in Dearborn, MI, Kapp made the comments, but wouldn’t speculate on exactly what sort of numbers the EcoBoost F-150 would put out.

For the model year, the EcoBoost F-150 is expected.
