Auto EV: Chevrolet presents the Volt MPV5 electric concept

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Chevrolet has revealed the Volt MPV5 electric concept car at the Beijing Motor Show, the latest in Chevrolet’s series of electric cars.

The Volt MPV5 features design cues from Chevrolet’s Volt electric car as well as their Orlando MPV concept car, with its front grille design, 19-inch aluminium wheels, and dual skylights. Interior, the Volt MPV5 boasts leather upholstery and seating for five and 863 litres of boot space, expandable to 1764 litres with the seats folded down.

The Chevrolet Volt MPV5 concept measures 4585mm long, 1871mm wide and 1612mm tall. The wheelbase, which is 2760mm long, is 15mm longer than the Chevrolet Volt. Power comes from an electric motor which produces 150bhp and 370Nm of torque. The 16kWh lithium-ion battery pack that powers the electric motor allows the Volt MPV5 a range of 51.5km, while a 1.4-litre petrol engine that recharges the battery also provides power and gives an additional 482km of range. Top speed is said to be 160km/h.

The Volt MPV5 concept demonstrates the flexibility of the Voltec propulsion system, which can produce enough electric power to propel a range of vehicles from a compact sedan like the Volt to a crossover like the Volt MPV5 concept, according to Doug Parks, GM’s Global Vehicle Chief Engineer for Electric Vehicles.
