Auto News: Fiat to group Abarth, Alfa Romeo and Maserati together

The Abarth, Alfa Romeo and Maserati brands amalgamated under a single group, according to the announcement of the Fiat Group.

Sergio Marchionne, the Fiat Group’s boss announced the decision, and the new group for the Abarth, Alfa Romeo and Maserati brands will be headed by German Harald J. Wester. Wester will also retain his position as Chief Technical Officer for Fiat Group and Fiat Group Automobiles and Chief Executive Officer of Maserati and Abarth.

According to Marchionne, the purpose of bringing the Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Abarth brands under the same leadership is to emphasize and leverage the value of the shared qualities of the three brands in terms of their sporting characteristics and performance.

Other changes within the Fiat Group pertaining to the new shake-up is the appointment of former Volkswagen and Audi executive Sergio Cravero as Product Portfolio Planning & Product Concept of Fiat Group Automobiles, who gives up his position as CEO of Alfa Romeo to Wester.

Auto Unveil: All new Mazda 5 revealed

Mazda has wrapped-off the latest generation of its popular 5 MPV, which will be officially launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

New Mazda 5 has key features- the “Nagare Flow” design language, seen on previous Mazda concepts such as the Furai, and features striking swash lines along the side of the car, as well as Mazda’s trademark front end treatment.

From its predecessor, the new Mazda 5 retains the rear sliding doors, and can boast of seating capacity of up to seven passengers, in three rows of seats.

According to Hideki Matsuoka, Mazda5 Program Manager, “their main goal with the all-new Mazda5, was to develop a new C-MAV (C-segment Multi Activity Vehicle) that combines the superior environmental performance these times demand with a new expression in stylish design.”

Under the hood, the Mazda 5 will receive a brand new 2.0-litre DISI1 four-cylinder petrol engine with direct injection that comes with an engine stop-start system called i-stop.

There will also be a 1.8-litre petrol unit that produces 115bhp and 165Nm of torque, with six-speed manual transmissions standard for both. The all new Mazda 5 is expected to go on sale later this year.
