Generation Y new vehicle shoppers in the U.S. are more likely than the previous generations to consider purchasing a Chinese or Indian branded vehicle and are more willing to accept hybrid powertrains and are more interested in the latest entertainment technology in their vehicles.

Growing up with continuously evolving technology and electronics has given Generation Y a unique ability to adapt easily to change, a willingness to accept new brands, and an expectation that their vehicle provide the best of what is available.

Also, despite popular belief, Generation Y are not really interested in compact cars. Instead, over half of Generation Y is considering buying a mid-size car or a midsize crossover SUV.

Willing to embrace new brands, new technology and alternative powertrains, Generation Y will redefine the automotive market.

Generation Y is more likely than older generations to own portable electronics, more likely to research their vehicle options on the Internet, and an astonishing 29% more likely to frequently multi-task while driving.

Despite popular belief, Generation Y is not a Compact Car generation. Over half of Generation Y is considering purchasing a mid-size car, mid-size crossover SUVs are high on their list as well. They expect that technology will improve fuel economy and environmental friendliness and allow them to purchase a vehicle that is sized to meet their personal needs.

Generation Y Opportunity is conducted annually to determine who Generation Y buyers are and what they want from their future cars, including size, engine, transmission and attributes like entertainment features, luxury features, in-vehicle communications and comfort and convenience features.

GWM’s X240 is a dual-range 4×4 wagon for under $24,000

A lot of families are going to be drawn to the latest entrant in the VFACTS compact SUV segment — the Great Wall X240.

Officially, the Chinese-built SUV is on sale now, costing at $23,990 including on-road costs. It combines a 2.4-litre petrol engine driving through a five-speed manual transmission to a four-wheel drive system with shift-on-the-fly dual-range transfer.

According to the information gathered by the federal government for ADR compliance lists the X240’s powerplant as a fuel-injected four-cylinder engine developing 90kW of power at 5250rpm.

The X240 measures 4.6m in length and 1.8m in width, and rides on a 2.7m wheelbase at a ground clearance of 180mm. Fuel consumption is 10.4L/100km in combined-cycle testing, running 95 RON premium ULP. CO2 emissions are 244g/km, according to the Green Vehicle Guide.

Other features include the dual front airbags, ABS/EBD and reverse parking sensors are fitted as standard, as are electrically-adjustable driver’s seat, leather seat trim, air conditioning, central locking, eight-speaker MP3-compatible CD audio system and alloy wheels.

The wheels measure 17×7J and are fitted with 235/65R17 tyres. Buyers can specify the X240 with an optional sunroof, priced at $1000.

Ateco is selling the X240 with a three-year/100,000km warranty, incorporating a 24-hour roadside assistance program.
