General Motors have rolled out its first pre-production models of the Opel Ampera EV in Warren, Michigan, which will be used for testing and validating the production intent design as well as developing the final vehicle software and control.
According to Vehicle Chief Engineer for the Ampera, Andrew Farah, GM is right on target for producing the Ampera for European markets later next year. “There’s still work to be done, but being able to drive an Opel Ampera off our pre-production line is a great accomplishment for the teams here and in Europe.”
The Ampera is based on the Chevrolet Volt EV, and share the same extended-range electric drivetrain, interior and basic sheet metal, with only minor styling details marking out the difference between both cars.
Both cars can travel up to 60km on pure electric power alone, with a small petrol engine kicking in after that to increase the range to 500km. The Ampera is set to go on sale by the end of 2011.
